Fraser island

20 september 2009 - Hervey Bay, Australië

Get up at 6:30 to attend my second briefing about my self drive( four wheel drive) tour of the largest sand island in the world. I'm in a group with 3 English dudes, two Irish girls and a French guy. We go there on a barge ad then start working our way across the island's extremely bumpy bush paths. You'd be bouncing all over the place in the cars. And we had a crate of cuttelry that kept coming down from the top storrage, so we'd had to be continuously watchful, so it wouldn't cruss our brains. The island is simply amazing. The first lake I see just takes my breath away. WHITE sand, and turcoise water, embraced by forrest of which the beauty is hard to describe. The beach is 75 miles long ad is just huge, there's no end to it. On the beach there's beautiful little creeks that stream down from the gorgeous lakes.

At first the group doesn't seem anything to write home about, but that slowly changes as we bond on the second day with some crazy adventures. At one point we encountered a tree that lay across the road. All other turck could pass underneath it, but because ours had a luggage storage on top, we couldn't. After considering the options of tunneling unerneath it and moving the log, we decided it's best to reverse back up the extremely bumpy path. This lost us so much time that the tide had started coming in and the beach had almost disappeared. This meant we had to find alternative routes around the rock formation, which were now fully engulfed by the sea. But yeah at the end I felt like I had made some friends and just for a little bit there, it kinda felt like I had a family again :P

First night I went to bed early and slept 11 hours, second night I joined in with the Brits and Irish in their drinking game. Was drunk in under 30 minutes probably. Fun yet weird night ensued (see pictures). Freeze my ass off in the tent that night. Somewhere in there I swam in one of the beautiful lakes. The temperature was perfect, you could stay in as log as you wanted without getting cold. It must've be the best swimming I ever did. Next day I hit my toe while walking up the steps and am bleeding all over the place, so no more swimming after that :( (had to skip lake McKenzie, which might've been even better than the other one, as you shall see in the pics). I'm okay now, I cleaned my toe and everything using my excellent first aid kit :)
